LOWELL, Mass. - July 16, 2002 - Konarka Technologies, an innovator in the development of flexible, polymer and nanoparticle-based photovoltaic technology, today announced the appointment of Bill Beckenbaugh, Ph.D, to the position of president and chief executive officer. As CEO, Beckenbaugh will leverage his experience in the commercialization of new technologies to drive the growth of the company and its evolution from an R&D-based firm to a manufacturer and provider of products.
"Bill brings with him an exceptional career record of corporate leadership and technical innovation," said Howard Berke, Chairman of Konarka Technologies' Board of Directors. "His proven experience in linking business and technology strategies will have a significant impact in bringing Konarka's technological development to market."
"I chose to join Konarka Technologies because of the company's synergy of world-class scientists and process engineers who are revolutionizing the application of photovoltaic technology," said Beckenbaugh. "The market potential for Konarka's technology is truly global and I am eager to work with the exceptional Konarka technical team and business partners to transform the company's breakthrough technologies into marketable products and solutions."
Bill's extensive background includes more than 28 years of senior level leadership in electronics manufacturing and R&D. Before joining Konarka, Bill served as senior vice president of Sanmina-SCI Corporation, where he was responsible for the strategic technical direction of the company. Previously, he served as senior vice president and chief technology officer of HADCO, and vice president and director of the Corporate Manufacturing Research Center at Motorola.
Bill has been widely published and his R&D accomplishments have been recognized with 15 U.S. patents.
"Bill is clearly the right individual to lead the transformation of Konarka and the commercialization of its technology," said Bic Stevens, Managing Director of Zero Stage Capital, an early-stage venture capital firm that has provided Konarka with over $4 million in funding to date. "Zero Stage Capital's decision to invest in Konarka was based on the company's exemplary team, which is producing ground-breaking technology with compelling fundamentals. Bill's extensive experience enhances the team significantly. We believe the company is ready to shift into revenue-generation mode."
